We are pleased to update you on a significant new initiative for our community. The Shire of Cocos (Keeling) Islands has officially commenced work on our first-ever Public Health Plan.
Guided by the Western Australian Chief Health Officer and aligned with the Public Health Act 2016 (WA), developing this strategy is a formal requirement for the Indian Ocean Territories. However, beyond simply meeting our legal obligations, we view this as a vital opportunity to build a meaningful, five-year roadmap for our islands.
While the Shire does not directly manage every local health service, this plan will provide the evidence we need to advocate for better services and secure the government grants required for larger community projects.
Our Strategic Priorities
Because we operate within a set annual budget, we must be practical about where we focus our resources. We are using a "Hierarchy of Needs" framework to ensure we secure the essentials first— such as clean water, community safety, and core health services—before moving toward more aspirational lifestyle and growth goals.
How You Can Help
To ensure this plan is grounded in the reality of life on the Islands, we need your local expertise and insights. We invite you to complete our brief stakeholder survey to share your thoughts on local health risks, service gaps, and future priorities.
• Take the Survey Online: You can complete the digital survey using the link below.
• Completion Time: Approximately 5–10 minutes.
• Privacy: All responses are completely anonymous and will be used for planning purposes only.
• For Agencies: If you represent a service provider, Section 7 is specifically designed to captureyour professional insights into service barriers and risks.
Submitting Your Feedback
Please return your completed survey via email or drop a hard copy to the Shire office by Monday, 1 June 2026.
